Application For el movimiento
Project overview | Call for artists
This mural project is rooted in a deep connection to Chicano culture and the long-standing tradition of using public art as a form of storytelling, resistance, and preservation. Across cities like San Diego, El Paso, and throughout the Southwest, murals have served as living histories of our people. This project seeks to bring that same cultural expression to Oklahoma City.
The selected site, the piers beneath the overpass near Manuel Perez Jr. Park, holds powerful cultural significance. The park honors a young Chicano veteran and represents the presence, contributions, and history of our community. In many cities, overpass pillars have become open-air galleries, transforming overlooked spaces into places of pride and reflection. These piers offer that same opportunity here.
This project invites Chicano and Latino artists and muralists to participate in creating a series of murals that celebrate heritage, identity, and community. Artists will have the opportunity to represent elements such as Chicano history, lowrider culture, Indigenous roots, family, resilience, and the shared experiences that shape our culture, while also honoring Oklahoma’s local context.
The goal is not only to beautify the space, but to create a lasting cultural landmark that amplifies visibility, uplifts local artists, and allows future generations to see themselves reflected in public art.
El Movimiento, “The Movement,” is about representation, pride, and voice. It is an open call for artists to help transform these pillars into a powerful visual statement that honors Chicano culture, tells our stories, and affirms that our community belongs here.
